Our Church History
Our Church History
Prior to 1812, Baptists worshiped in the Town of Gorham, while Presbyterians worshiped in a nearby location. By the Civil War, many of the Presbyterians became Congregationalists. Both Baptists and Congregationalists maintained separate churches in the hamlet of Reed Corners within 300 yards of each other.
In the 1940s the two churches federated, sharing a pastor and alternating meeting places. Eventually the Congregational denomination became the United Church of Christ and the Baptist denomination became American Baptist Church. Some of our church members continue to support the missions of these original denominations.
